Sat March 20th at QUIRKS: (the gig that never happened - thanks Marrickville Council - Nice blurb though)
"The Bakery are one of those bands you must see live to really appreciate what all the fuss is about. 11 talented performers, clad in outrageous costumes, whipping crowds into a dancing frenzy. The music is energetic, warm, soulful and spicy, a fizzy cocktail of funk, ska, afrobeat, swing, reggae and soul. Saturday March 20th sees The Bakery emerge from an extended songwriting sojourn to play their first major Sydney headline show of 2010. 2009 saw The Bakery move from strength to strength performing like busy little bees all around the country; multiple festival headline slots, several sold-out shows at Sydney's premier venue 'The Basement', New Years countdown twice at Peats Ridge Festival, appearances as part of Sydney Festival, Brisbane Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival along with endless touring up and down the east coast of Australia. Be sure to take tjhis rare opportunity to catch this amazing act in the intimate setting of Quirks on Saturday March 20th.
“Exuberant, fun and musically brilliant - the Bakery is an invitation to the best party in town”
Richard Glover, ABC 702
Serving up a heavenly cocktail of musical styles, from funk to swing, afrobeat to ska and beyond, the music of The Bakery is catchy, soulful, energetic and powerful. Their live show is a feast for the senses– crazy costumes, wild onstage antics and irresistibly danceable songs. An amazing live band, beautifully infectious music, the best party hosts in town.
ALBUM REVIEW by Jaslyn Hall
Hot from The Bakery
This live Sydney band really cooks on their debut studio album
When you are crackling hot live, recording in a studio must be a labour of love. It's paid off for this Sydney 11-piece band. They've only been around since 2006, but already know what makes the hearts of fans beat fast. The music is a blast of horns, keys, guitar, bass, drums and percussion, ska, soul, swing, reggae and drum 'n' bass. Energetic ska-fuelled beats drive 'Handsome Young Devil". The two female vocalists provide the perfect mix for the driving soulful grooves of 'Way Back', the opening track. The arrangements are tight, the rhythm section keeps the beat pumping, and there is some extraordinary soloing - everyone pushes to the limit in this debut recording. I'm sure that their live 'neo-orgasmic-soul-funk-jungle-party-core' tag will always be intact. We all have a universal need to groovem and The bakery make great music for loving and dancing, a CD you can listen to again and again.
